understanding of audit processes and methodologies. He eventually left public service to join a Sacramento law firm where he defended taxpayers against state and local taxing authorities across the country with aggressive audit defense, audit appeals, and settlement negotiations.

Jason joined a tax-technology company in 2014 where he led the audit support group, and handled special projects related to multistate tax research, private letter rulings, and voluntary compliance. In this role, he gained experience using and troubleshooting automated tax-calculation software. He has assisted clients with software implementations, configuring tax settings, and developing custom rules to meet client-specific needs. His experience has proven useful in making sure outdated tax regulations are applied correctly by modern tax calculation software.

 

Jason joined ZHF in 2017 and hit the ground running by representing taxpayers before the Ohio Department of Taxation in sales and use tax matters.  He also continues to provide multistate sales and use tax services to ZHF clients. Jason spent a significant amount of time assisting clients in the aftermath of the Wayfair decision, which opened the door for states across the country to impose economic nexus standards on remote sellers. He has assisted numerous clients develop and execute action plans to navigate remote sellers’ obligations, mitigate tax exposure, and come into compliance across many states. He has negotiated favorable voluntary disclosure agreements, settlements, and implemented other strategies in response to post-Wayfair legislation.

 

As one example of the value Jason provides our multistate clients, he recently obtained millions of dollars in refunds across 28 states. Jason is a key part of ZHF’s state and local tax team. He has presented basic sales and use tax seminars for business owners, as well as delivered in-depth technical presentations about the audit process to other tax professionals and CPAs.

  • Successfully defended hundreds of taxpayers in disputed sales and use tax audits through preliminary and formal appeals procedures.
