The Ohio Department of Taxation issued a News Release today announcing that Ohio Tax Commissioner Jeff McClain will be retiring on December 31, 2022. McClain served as Ohio Tax Commissioner for four years following his appointment to the position by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

According to the Release, Commissioner McClain, in his resignation letter submitted to the Governor today, said it was an honor and privilege to serve the citizens of Ohio and praised the staff of the Department of Taxation saying their efforts have improved virtually every aspect of the department’s operations.

Prior to becoming Tax Commissioner, McClain served as Director of Tax and Economic Policy with the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. Commissioner McClain also served four terms and eight years as a State Representative in the General Assembly from Upper Sandusky.

Prior to his time in the legislature, McClain served as the Wyandot County Auditor for 26 years.

Governor Mike DeWine’s office has not announced any guidance on a replacement for Commissioner McClain. If the administration is unable to identify a replacement by January 1st, then an Interim Tax Commissioner is likely to be installed. In similar past situations, one of the Deputy Tax Commissioners has been chosen to temporarily lead the agency.

ZHF congratulates Commissioner McClain on his fine public service and wishes him well.
